Djanogly Art Gallery and Museum of Archaeology

The Djanogly Art Gallery at the University of Nottingham opened in 1992, part of a new Arts Centre which included the departments of Art History and Music. In 2011 Art History moved out to the new Humanities building, and the Museum was to vacate the archaeology building. This presented the opportunity to extend and refurbish the Gallery, and move the Museum to a new location next door. What was the old slide library was converted into a bright new home for the Museum. In my role as Deputy Director I was a member of the project team working with the University’s Estates Office and architects Marsh Grochowski. The firm had designed other buildings within Lakeside Arts Centre including the D H Lawrence Pavilion.
The Gallery’s first exhibition in its enlarged space was L S Lowry. It was unusual to see so many Lowry paintings and drawings outside of the North West and the show was astonishingly popular. The new low energy Erco Logotec LED fittings seemed to bring out the whiteness of even the melancholic scenes..
